Omaha Event -Pi Day

From our friends at Meca:

Pi Day in the Park

We’re celebrating Pi Day at The RiverFront! Come visit the Canopies at Gene Leahy Mall this Tuesday, March 14th for National Pi Day, an annual holiday based on the mathematical constant that begins with 3.14 (and so on).

Nebraska SciFest will be on site with fun activities to educate on and honor the number, Pi. Visitors are invited to make their own bracelets using the numerical digits from Pi and learn more about the discovery of this important figure!

And speaking of Pi(e), pick out your own mini-pie from Pettit’s Pastry with personal cherry or apple pies to take home! It doesn’t get much sweeter than Pi Day at The RiverFront.

The fun starts appropriately at 3:14 PM on March 14th near 13th and Farnam Streets!

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium Welcomes Elephant Calf

Omaha, Neb. (March 2, 2023) – Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium is thrilled to announce the birth of a male elephant calf at 2:20 a.m. this morning, March 2, 2023. The mother is Lolly, an 11-year-old African elephant. Both Lolly and her calf are doing well.

This is the third African elephant calf born at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, joining half-siblings, Eugenia and Sonny, who were both born in January 2022. Callee, the sire to all three calves, is 22 years old and joined Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium in 2019.

The elephant care team was monitoring Lolly 24-hours-a-day in anticipation of the birth.

At this time, the Elephant Family Quarters will be temporarily closed to the public to allow Lolly some quiet time to bond with her calf. Guests will have the opportunity to see all three elephant calves with the herd in the Elephant Family Quarters once reopened.

The first African elephant calf, Eugenia, was born at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium, to dam Kiki on January 7, 2022. Sonny was born to dam Claire on January 30, 2022.

Updates regarding this third calf and the anticipated arrival of the fourth elephant calf, who is expected to arrive to mother Jayei in late summer, will be provided via media alerts and the Zoo’s social media pages as information becomes available.

Omaha Area Event: Pączki Day, 19 February

Don’t miss Pączki Day!! It’s time for the annual event across the country to celebrate Mardi Gras but Polish style.

Pączki is pronounced “punch key” and is the plural of pączek which is pronounced “punch ek”.

Still wondering what it is? It’s a fantastic fried donut with fruit filling and drenched in sugar.

Pączki Day is actually 21 February, Tuesday. It and some last pre-lenten revelry take place the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.  Traditionally, Lent has met with fasting and prayer. Fasting meant no meat nor dairy (eggs and milk) for the forty day preparation and has gone through many changes for Western Christianity.

Where to get them?

The Polish Home, of course.

When to get them?

Get some between noon and 3PM. I’d come early as these delectable donuts will undoubtedly go fast.
