Ashley Howe. I am the Nebraska Area Director for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

And today we are setting up for our Omaha Walk. It’s called the Omaha Out of the Darkness Walk. It brings in about 3 to 4,000 people each year to Stinson Park and we raise money to impact suicide prevention and mental health throughout Nebraska.

Every dollar that we raise goes towards the impact that we make at AFSP, which is the acronym for American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

The event has been going on for almost 25 years and has a lot of activities.

During the first portion that includes cross crafts for kids, memorial activities, a reflection tent for meditation.

We have honor beads. That’s a big part of AFSP. They are representative of how you are connected to the mission. So, each color represents how what brought you in. So it might be the loss of a sibling, the loss of a parent, just supporting the cause, a suicide attempt, yourself or a friend. Just coming together to support the mission of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

We also have an entire resource center that we have over 40 other organizations that come and give information to our walkers as well as swag and other materials.

And then at 11am on Saturday, we have an opening ceremony, a check presentation. We highlight our top walk, our top walkers, top fundraisers, and then the walk begins. We walk around Aksarben Park and support each other.

Thank you.
